LAUGH ‘TIL IT HURTS AT ISLAND ETC’S NEWEST PRODUCTION
Island ETC is proud to present (Tony-Award winner) Christopher Durang’s absurdly funny comedy, WHY TORTURE IS WRONG, AND THE PEOPLE WHO LOVE THEM. This play with the grammatically confused title opens at ETC, 2317 Mechanic in Galveston on Friday, November 16thwith performances continuing through Saturday, December 8th. (*Please note that the Sunday matinee for this production has been moved to November 18th.)
Durang does take on some timely topics and references in WHY TORTURE IS WRONG, AND THE PEOPLE WHO LOVE THEM, however he would prefer that the audience reach their own conclusions through the humor. This is not a ‘politically correct’ – whatever that is – comedy.
It begins with Felicity (Casey Magin) waking up after a drunken night beside a man she quickly learns is now her husband. He’s named Zamir (Justin Gonzalez) and Felicity suspects that he is either a terrorist or totally crazy. Felicity tries unsuccessfully for an annulment following Zamir’s threats. She then takes him to meet her parents. Luella, Felicity’s mother, (Amy Sheetz) is definitely off-balance and totally obsessed with the theatre. Her father, Leonard (Cameron Dunbar) harbors extremely far, far right political views. Adding in to this hysterical mix are Hildegard (Julie Fontenot), a true believer of Leonard, a minister who also make porn films (Mark Christian) and a mystery man (Matt Poole) who appears throughout the play in several forms.
Directing this production is Kim Mytelka. Scenic designer is Tom Boone, and Lisa Miller is the lighting designer. David Cooley is production stage manager.
Performances begin on Friday, November 16th. Performances are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings at 8:00pm through December 8th. **However there will be no performance on Thanksgiving. There is one Sunday matinee on November 18that 2:30pm.
